5 Ways for Medical Professionals to Overcome the Cycle of Overwhelm and Burnout

Here is What You'll Learn

How to recognise the Stories you and your Colleagues Believe to be True

Everyone has stories. Every organisation has stories - the same beliefs shared among so many that they seem so obviously true that we never question them. Once you start to recognise how you yourself are holding in place stories which are so unhelpful, you can start to let them go and leave room for creative solutions.

You are NOT your doctor identity

When you have invested so much time and energy into your career as a doctor it can be hard to remember who you are without this label. This makes stepping back when you need to extremely difficult. Learn a new way of understanding yourself that makes you way more effective with less stress.

How to Take Ownership

Painful as it may sound, many of us are stuck in a victim mentality. Within a cumbersome and dysfunctional system, it's not surprising that you may have slipped into feeling powerless. But there are ways to take ownership of your job, your life and your feelings, whatever the situation.

Realise You are NOT Indespensable

I'm sorry - I had to say it. Of course it feels as if you are - but listen to any burnt-out medic and they will tell you otherwise. Find out how to escape this insidious belief.

Be Clear on Your Own Priorities

When you deeply care about others, it's easy to slip into a habit of saying yes to everything that comes your way. There are plenty of reasons to do this...but one very compelling reason not to: it leads to burnout.

Stop Taking Things So Personally

It always feels personal, doesn't it? When you're criticised, unsupported, complained about or even investigated, we often feel these things deep inside us - like a dagger to the heart. Learning how to see things as less personal is a life-saving shift.
